You can have as much at .006" runout and still leave a nice even pattern. When I machine seats they are always well under .001" runout, and the valves are well under .0005" after refacing.
Aug 19, 2014· You do realize that the valves rotate when the engine is running don't you. I was always told to lap back and forth with lapping compound then turn the valve several degrees and lap some more, making sure you have a complete circle around the valve face and well as the valve seat.

I lap the valves with very fine compound just to be sure where the valve is contacting the seat. Lapping valves instead of doing a proper valve job worked OK on flatheads.
